Chinese arrival at the Shokalskiychristurney
The passengers were picked up by a Chinese helicopter a dozen at a time and transported to a nearby Australian icebreaker. That ship is now beginning a journey to Tasmania that is expected to take two weeks.

The voyage was intended to recreate Australian explorer Douglas Mawson's 1911 to 1913 expedition (hence the hashtag spirtiofmawson), but ended up looking a lot more like Sir Ernest Shackleton's expedition with the vessel
. However, they were rescued rather quickly and it doesn't look like the ice will crush the MV Akademik Shokalskiy.
We've made it to the Aurora australis safe & sound. A huge thanks to the Chinese & @AusAntarctic for all their hard work! #spiritofmawsonChris Turney
The 22 Russian crew members will remain on board the ship until the pack ice eventually breaks up and they can move. The crew reportedly have enough supplies to last a long time.
